desk position/facing direction

Should my desk face one of my best Kua directions or should my back be to that direction. My Kua # is 3. I'm a woman. My desk is currently facing West, my back is to the East. This is the command position in the room. Is this a good placement or will facing the worst Kua direction, the west result in total loss even though I'm in the command position in the room?

This is an excellent and very detailed Feng Shui question. You've correctly identified two of the most important, and sometimes conflicting, principles of classical Feng Shui: the Command Position (based on the room's layout) and your Personal Kua Directions. Let's break this down specifically for you, a woman with Kua number 3. First, Let's Confirm Your Kua Number and Directions You are a woman with Kua number 3. This is your East Group persona. Your Best Directions (Sheng Chi): South Your Health/Longevity Direction (Tien Yi): North Your Harmony/Stability Direction (Nien Yen): Southeast Your Personal Growth Direction (Fu Wei): East These are your favorable directions. You ideally want to face one of these, or have beneficial energy (Qi) coming from one of these directions. Your Worst Directions: Total Loss (Jue Ming): West (This is your most inauspicious direction) Six Killings (Liu Sha): Southwest Five Ghosts (Wu Gui): Northwest Obstacles/Harm (Ho Hai): Northeast Your current desk faces West. This means you are looking directly into your "Total Loss" direction. According to the strict interpretation of Kua directions, this is the absolute worst direction for you to face. The Conflict: Command Position vs. Facing Direction You've hit on a classic dilemma. The Command Position is powerful because it gives you a psychological and energetic sense of control. You can see the door, you're not startled, and you feel secure. This is a fundamental principle that shouldn't be ignored. If you feel vulnerable in a space, it's very difficult to do your best work, no matter which way you're facing. However, in many classical schools of thought, your personal energy alignment is considered more potent than the room's layout. Facing your "Total Loss" direction (West) can be seen as energetically swimming upstream. It can lead to feeling drained, making poor decisions, experiencing financial setbacks, or feeling like you're constantly fighting a losing battle. The Verdict: What Should You Do? The short answer is: While your command position is correct, facing West is likely creating significant energetic friction for you. You are correct to be concerned. The goal is to harmonize the two principles as much as possible. You don't necessarily have to abandon the command position, but you do need to mitigate the negative influence of facing West. Here is your action plan, ranked from best to least effective solutions: Best Solution: Adjust Your Position Within the Command Post You have the desk in the power spot, which is great. Now, we need to change your facing direction without moving the desk's physical location in the room. Angle Your Chair and Desk: If possible, shift your desk and chair so you are no longer facing directly West. Angle it so you are facing Southwest or even South. Facing South would be ideal, as it's your best direction. Facing Southwest is one of your "Six Killings" directions, which is still unfavorable, but it's a significant step up from "Total Loss." It's the lesser of two evils. The Key: Even a 45-degree angle change can make a huge difference energetically. You want your energy body (your face and chest) to be oriented away from the West. Maintain View of the Door: By angling your desk, you can often still keep the door in your peripheral vision, preserving the spirit of the command position. Good Solution: Use Powerful Feng Shui Cures If you absolutely cannot move the desk and must face West, you need to introduce strong elements to weaken the negative "Total Loss" energy. The Metal Element: The "Total Loss" star (West) is associated with the element of Metal. In the Five Element cycle, Fire controls/weakens Metal. You need to introduce a strong Fire element in front of you, on your desk, or on the West wall. What to use: A bright, warm desk lamp (turn it on when you work). The color red (a red mousepad, a piece of red art on the West wall, a red folder on your desk). Triangular or pointed shapes (representing Fire). An image of the sun or a sunrise. Avoid: Do not use crystals or metallic objects (like a metal lamp) in the West, as this would strengthen the negative energy. Important Considerations Women's Feng Shui (A Note): Some more intuitive schools of Feng Shui suggest that women are more receptive to energy coming from behind them. For a woman, facing her "Harmony" or "Growth" directions can be wonderful, but having her best directions at her back can also be powerful. This is a more advanced nuance. Given that "Total Loss" is extremely inauspicious, it's better to err on the side of not facing it, even for a woman. Trust Your Gut: You are the one in the space. How do you feel? If you've been working facing West and feel constantly drained, unfocused, or unlucky, your intuition is confirming the Feng Shui. If you feel fine, perhaps the command position is mitigating the effect more than usual. But given your Kua, facing West is a significant risk. Summary Recommendation Prioritize: Your first goal is to stop facing West. This is non-negotiable given it's your "Total Loss" direction. Try Angling: Attempt to angle your desk and chair to face South (best) or at least Southwest (less bad). This is your best chance to keep the command position. If All Else Fails: If you must face West, immediately introduce a powerful Fire element cure (like a red lamp) directly in your line of sight or on your desk to suppress the negative energy.

Thank you SOOO much for this answer. One thing I was told by someone who does Feng Shui consultations is that it was ok to place my desk with my back facing East since I have my bookcases and an altar at my back. It never felt right. It's going to be tricky because the room is small. I can face my desk South and the door will be to my right. It's in my home so I don't feel vulnerable in this position. Just looks a bit wonky. Do you offer consultations?
