The story is also a way to re-explain a small detail about the zodiac. In some parts of China (and still in Vietnam apparently) the Cat occupied the same spot as the Rabbit. So the Rabbit version just became more popular apparently.
It's just a story made by people. The cat love to eat the rat in nature. The story just explain why the cat and rat are enemies. In life, cat eat rat. But nowadays, the cat fed by families are afraid of the rat and not dare to eat them.
